If you're looking for a good read, and you haven't read anything by Robert Hilburn (pop music critic at the Los Angeles Times from 1970 through 2005), this is a great place to start. His insights into the music scene, especially in 1970's LA, and his writing style held my interest throughout the book. If fact, I liked his style so much I'm reading his latest, Paul Simon, which is also great.

    thanks for the recommendation :)

i'm reading the sample - finished bono's substantial and well-written intro and am into the book, and i am finding myself really interested and curious. i'll be ordering this as soon as i decide whether i want a physical copy or want to read it on my kindle.

I was most interested in his assessment of the few musicians he thought were/are true original and important voices. You may disagree, but I liked his way of thinking about the question.

that's cool - i don't have to agree with someone to find their thoughts interesting :)

I never actually learned to play very well
Robert Hilburn turned me on to a lot of good stuff like Elvis Costello’s debut album My Aim is True.

The book looks like a very good read.
