Could someone with a vol/tone vol/tone Jazz bass do me a huge favor?

If anyone's feeling nice enough today, could you try turning your bridge pickups volume to full and tone to zero and the neck pickups volume to about 1/2 (facing the top screw of the control plate) and tone to full? And telling me how it sounds. I have an idea, but would like to know if it sounds alright before I go through with it. Thanks a ton for an help guys. :help:

Wait, what? Whoever heard of a V/T/V/T Jazz? Secondly, are you trying to find out whether you should mod your bass with a second tone pot or something? Maybe spell out your intentions, you might get some helpful responses that way. Even if somebody does have a V/T/V/T Jazz, what are they going to say? "Sounds OK to me." Will you base a planned mod on that?

Someone here has to have either a '62 or RI.

I assume the OP is talking about dual stacked V/T pots as on my '62 RI.

I don't have my amp handy right now, but I've used settings "similar" to to one you describe. It sounds, um, ... good. But so much depends on your playing technique, your pickups, your strings, your ears, the amp, the room, the rest of the band, etc.

If I had to characterize the setting, it would be sort of a thicker, more-modern take on Jaco's sound on his self-titled album. Like on "Come on, Come Over". Sort of.

Are you thinking of rewiring your bass based on other people's verbal descriptions? Personally, I don't think the dual tone controls add much to the tonal palette, but ymmv.

What I'm thinking of doing is wiring it so that the neck pickup is always at full tone and the bridge pickup is always at zero. (Is that even possible? I assume it would have something to do with resistors.) And using the hole where a normal tone pot would be to add a mute switch so I don't have to screw with my volume blend to mute the bass. Could be a total waste of time/money. So I wanted to get some opinions before I commit to anything.

You could get that setting by running the neck pickup from its volume directly to the jack, bypassing any tone control (that will keep the neck at full tone) and then just wire a capacitor inline from the bridge volume directly to the jack, that will be the equivalent of keeping the bridge pickup always at zero. You can then put your mute switch into the tone pot hole.

Or you can leave the tone pot in place, have it connected only to the bridge pickup (for adjustability later) and use a push/pull pot in place of one of them in order to make a mute switch...

How about a stacked tone/tone pot, for adjustability, and a push/pull volume for the mute?

Hmm, that's a good idea, makes me want to modify my Jazz electronics yet again...

Hell, if I get the parts, I might try it myself!
