Sorry if this has been done before, I did a quick search and didn't see anything quite like it.
...So, the wife is going on about that Joss Stone song "Fell in love with a boy" when I tell her that it was originally a White Stripes song. I said that the Joss Stone version was really nice, but that I prefer the original version. She then accuses me of being some sort of anti cover song snob (???). In my defense I said that there were many cover songs that I liked better than the original, but when put on the spot I could only think of three.

Earth, Wind, and Fire- Got to get you into my life.
    Johnny Cash-Hurt
Hendrix- All along the watch tower.

Phish had a real knack for making any song sound like they wrote it - so they are my favorite 'cover band', haha. I could make a long list but to name just one...Loving Cup (Stones).

I'm pretty sure Johnny Cash covered that song. I like Cash's cover of One by U2 and The Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of Higher Ground.

EDIT: Forgot Tool's cover of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter.

Johnny Cash did indeed cover Hurt by NIN. And he did do it far, far better than the original :)

Cradle of Filth - Hell Awaits (Slayer) and Black Metal (Venom).
Opeth - Circle of the Tyrant (Celtic Frost)
Type O Negative - Summer Breeze (Seals and Crofts)
Norther - Youth Gone Wild (Skid Row)
Nightwish - Walking in the Air (Whoever wrote the original Snowman cartoon song)
  10. Any early Beatles covers that they did, like "Roll Over Beethoven", "Long, Tall Sally", "Honey Don't", etc. I liked them all better than the originals. Lots of energy! :hyper:

every springsteen cover he has done has been better than the original:

we gotta get out of this place - animals
-devil in a blue dress medley - mitch rider
    -drift away -?
    etc etc etc

also joe cocker does great covers, basically made a career of it.

Johnny Cash doing Hurt was the first that came to mind. Gives me goosebumps.

Oh and I love Rush's cover of Summertime Blues. It's big, loud, and it sounds like they're having a blast.

    me too.

I know lots of covers that I prefer to the original... but to come to Joss Stone's defence, "Victim of A Foolish Heart" is a smoking cover.

I remember having arguments with my Mother back in the 80s.... I thought Robert Plant and the Honeydrippers did "Sea of Love" WAY better than Phil Phillips, but she wouldn't have any of that. It was a favorite song from her youth and she thought Plant butchered it

    Santana - Black Magic Woman
    Jeff Beck - She's a Woman
Derek and the Dominos - Little Wing (Maybe not better, but still petty good)
    Stones - Little Queenie
    Cream - Spoonful

IMO, the best example of a cover that turned to be even more popular than the original tune is Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends".
