Ok, my punk band Five Second Rule! is looking for some covers to do, you know songs that the crowd will know, but ones that arent overplayed on radio or MTV, so like people will know its a cover, but still enjoy it. We really want to cover at least one green day song...we thought it would be cool to play like "she" and kick in to "jaded" instead of the usual "brainstew/jaded" combo (i hate brain stew). keep in mind we're talking only punk covers. thanks, -jake
If you want a better Green Day section, do either "Welcome to Paradise" or "When I come around." Niether are played much on the radio anymore, but both ar instantly recognizable and well liked. Covering Offspiring is another good idea. They have a mulititude (wow, I got to use a cool word) of popular songs. About all I can think of now. Try me again later. Rock on Eric
Well you could always do a New Found Glory cover. A cover of a cover... But if you want to do a GreenDay song i think Minoritry or Warning are the LATEST, not necessarily the best. Time of your life might be good if you make up a bass line and Drum Riff(s) for it but then it might ruin the whole deep and meaningful influence the song has.
Find some Blink 182, Sum 41, or Weezer that isn't terribly overplayed (The two kinda go hand and hand though). "I wanna be sedated" by the Rammones. I dunno, unless punk is overplayed on MTV, people don't know it.
Why not do basketcase? You're aiming more for new wave punk(pop-punk) aren't you? Or if you wanna do something cool, why not do a cover of some song everybody knows in any genre and punk it up. just my .02
Do a NOFX song, like "bob" or "we threw gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eybrows", i think simply saying the song name would be cool..also a good green day song would be Long View or When I come around. Those are my $.02
If I ever play a cover of Green Day...it's got to be "Burnout". But my guess is you should check The Ramones...
I would definately say Offspring or NOFX too (the longest line) Although the fun thing about punk is you can cover any style of song and make it into a punk tune. My band does I would walk 500 miles by the proclaimers for fun. Although we aren't punk but we do it heavier .
NOFX is always good to fall back on... we did "Drugs are good" which is cool cos [michael caine voice] not a lot of people know that [/michael caine voice] but the guitarist lost it half way through, and the sound guy kicked us off stage. or cover some sublime... sorry, i'm just in one of those "sublime kick ass" moods again... it happens alot. simon a
K, you need to do REAL PUNK! So this is freedom - the unseen Proud to be a canadian - dayglo abortions argh fcuk kill/die sinner die - dayglo abortions american psycho - misfits die die my darling - misfits twist of cain - danzig rotten future - anti-flag white minority - black flag friggin in the riggin - sex pistols don't you dare play none of that sum-41 blink-182 lets put stupid words and letters with numbers and pretend we play punk crap!
If you want to go retro (read: bad-@$$) punk, then go with something like Subhumans or Stormtroopers of Death. Maybe something from GWAR. Wait. You don't have a giant rubber Gwurm, do you? Nah, no GWAR covers. You could also do something a little less known, like Saxon or Diamond Head. Motorhead would also be pretty cool, and then you get to do Lemmy lines!!! Rock on Eric
Save Subhumans (heh, burnaby) those are all old-school metal bands. They tend to get mixed reactions at gigs.
Do a Dead Milkmen song!! Theres no reason not too. Bitchin Camaro is one of the most downloaded songs online. The Dead Milkmen sucked as a band, but were SOOOO cool that you just had to love em. Or try Punk Rock Girl. Two cool punk covers. But I would definatly reccomend a NOFX song.
You need to cover some non-punk songs too. When I see a punk band cover a punk song and sound like the punk bad that wrote it, I usually think they can read tab and play other bands' songs. But it's much more impressive, not to mention more fun, to take a song and change the style of it and add instrumental and vocal parts to make it your own.
