The only interesting pick I've ever thought to be cool was this massive thick plexiglass one my bass teacher was playing guitar with once. He said it gave him a fatter tone.

When I started playing bass, I read that Chris squire used a large coin as a pick. So I took a half dollar and cut it into a triangular pick shape.

It didn't make me play or sound like Chris Squire. Could never figure out why.

My friend used to use this weird foam rubber pick. Not only was it enormous and hard to play with, but it sounded like utter crap. I guess the idea was to emulate a fingerstyle sound, but it sure didn't work.

  11. The thread should be closed now. The Pick of Destiny wins hands down!!!

Picks shouldnt be spoken about in the Low End. Real Bass players use their fingers.

My ex and I both had picks given to us by a guy in Tok who made specially for us out of fossilized ivory with a tiny gold nugget on them back in '91 or so.

No idea if she's still got hers but I lost mine in my friends driveway last winter.

Agreed, should be moved to Misc.
And cut the BS arguing. Real bass players respect users, and usefulness, of all techniques.

As for pics...I personally don't use them therefore I don't know of any crazy ones. But my grandad always played acoutsic guitar when I was a kid. He died when I was a teenager and was bed ridden sick for at least ten years or so. So I really only got ot hear him play for a few years. But he was a butcher/farmer who played guitar in his spare time. He always cut his picks out of plastic milk bottles when they were emptied. I honestly don't think that he even knew about buying picks. He told me once that he played with his fingers for probably twenty years when he was growing up. He said that he decided one day to cut a piece of plastic from a milk bottle and try that. He said it gave him a lot more control and he liked the tone better. So he did that until he died. I remember his blues/bluegrass sounding really good.
But yeah, I guess a piece of plastic cut from a milk bottle qould qualify as a pretty crazy pic.
But the pic of doom is probably still the chamipon. :bassist:

  19. My husband who's a drummer but occasionally plays guitar uses these..

4 picks in a plastic credit card style thing that he puts in his wallet so he can just 'pop' one out when he needs it.
