Creating Percussive Sounds?

I've been working on Heaven by Los Lonely Boys . . and I was creating the percussive sounds by plucking the A string, then quickly hammering on the note . . . it sounded pretty good. (I was playing in G, instead of Gb/F#)

However, now the singer wants to drop it to E. So, transposing the song is easy, but, now hitting the A string doesn't quite work. The IV sounds a bit off.

I've been trying to get a similar sound by briefly smacking the E string before playing the note, but that makes it a bit muddy, probably due to my speed. Any other advice on getting the funky percussive sound?
