I have a rare early Custom Shop relic Jazz from the Vinny Cunetto era of Custom Shop relics. I have owned the bass for about 8 years and it has served me well playing live, and on sessions. I bought a 1966 Jazz last year and I promised the wife that I would sell one of them.

The previous owner had the bass professionally treated with copper-based paint in the pickup routes and beneath the pickguard. I have pictures posted of it. The early custom shop basses were embossed with the Custom Shop logo on the back of the neck and the body under the pickguard.

The weight is just under 9 lbs and it plays great.

Lots of pictures, so I am putting most of them in as thumbnails. The double bass pictures show it next to my 1966. That way you can compare the beauty of the Cunetto relic process next to an original. It's a rare and special bass.

    $3000 plus shipping

I would consider something like a Pedulla, Sadowsky, Dingwall, Sandberg, Lakland in trade/partial trade. Maybe another custom shop if it was something a little different.

Usually I don’t comment on these sale posts but wow these pictures really makes you appreciate the level of craftsmanship that goes into these custom shop instruments. It actually justifies the prices that these basses command. The 66’ is a beauty too

My antenna always goes up whenever a Cunetto era bass comes up for sale, as they so rarely do. I remember eight years ago when this was up for sale but my wife says if something new comes in, something else must go. Since I already have a Cunetto era jazz bass I watched quietly as this one sold.

The Cunetto era basses are special as you had some heavy weights working the Custom Shop during that time such as John Page, Jay Black and John Cruz. Try getting in the cue for a John Cruz master built instrument today. Four years ago the wait time was two years and the wait time has only increased. I’ll have to watch this one go again as I am hanging on to the one I have, but I’m sure to whomever this goes, they’ll be happy campers.

You can't overstate the attention and care that went into these Cunetto era guitars. I was around Vince a lot during this period, and visited the shop in Bolivar, MO (the jazz in my avatar is one that he put together for me there, and never made it back to CA). At the time the process of relic-ing was a new thing, with a lot of trial and error in the chemical recipes that would "age" hardware without damaging, as well as cosmetically not going over the top with finishes. Attention was paid to tapping out bodies and matching them with necks, as he is a musician as well.
When Fender corporate decided enough had been learned about the process, they started phasing out the shop and eventually did everything themselves. The combination of those particular heavies in the Custom Shop combined with Cunetto is why these are special and really hold their value. Inside baseball, and my opinion:) Beautiful bass, John!

No, but thank you for your comment. I was referring to Steve Mackey (Mackb12). I know he loves his Cunetto. The Steves know what's up with these.
You guys are making me think twice about it. I wouldn't sell it if I didn't buy the 1966 Jazz last year.

I don't think I'll ever part with mine, but then I don't have a real 66 to tempt me. :)

Hi John!! Both are sweet looking, and I’m sure play amazing. Good luck with the sale.
Ps - I’m still getting over not being able to meet up when you we’re here in Provo for the 4th of July gig. I hope our paths cross again soon. Stay safe and enjoy some family time while you can.

    Hey Branden,
Thanks for the comments. I'm sure we will cross paths sometime on the other side of this COVID mess.
