I am trying to find some decent modern-day-but-vintage-sounding Big Bands to listen to. Any suggestions?

I like old-school New Orleans jazz, and Gypsy Jazz alot too. Boogie, Stride piano, Ragtime, that kinda thing.

I know there's some cats out there still playing the old-style Jazz, who should I check out?

This may seem obvious, so be gentle. Harry Connick Jr.'s big band writing, arranging and piano playing are great. When you include New Orleans in your description, He immediately came to mind.

I am not quite sure qhat you mean by modern-day-but-vintage. I guess my question aould be: Which vintage?

Anyway, you can't go wrong with the Village Vanguard Big Band, or the Clayton/Hamilton Big Band.

I would of course also have to recommend the band I play with full-time: the WDR Big Band. I would suggest the youtube clips with the WDR Big Band and Maria Schneider if you like more modern big band sounds, the clips with Don Menza, James Moody, Lee Konitz if you like more straight-ahead, the clips with Patti Austin or Neenna Freelon if you like singers, and the clips with Take 6, Maceo Parker or the Brecker Bros if you like funky stuff.

    Happy listening!

Thanks guys. I guess what I am looking for is more hard swing / 40s type stuff. Gillespie, Ellington, Basie, etc.
