I've owned a gold topped Epiphone Jack Casady Signature bass since 1998, and play it every night. I was looking at some websites of dealers who sell JC basses when I noticed photos of the back of the headstocks that had stickers stating that they were made in China as opposed to Korea, where mine was made. So be it. If the Q.C. is good all is good. But, the new basses appeared to have backs and necks that are closer in color and finish to the original Gibson Les Paul Signature basses, from which the JC was derived. The coloring and finish on the back of my 1998 is very dark. Can anyone ,who has actually seen the China made and Korea made basses, comment on this? Do the newest ones show the wood grain more? And does anybody know when the wine red colored 20th Anniversary JC basses will actually see the light of day?
Not sure, but someone mentioned in another thread that they had just ordered one, so expect an NBD thread someday soonish...
Anyone got one of the new ones from china? The finish on the gold one is looking a lot lighter and less yellow and the backs are translucent now! At least on sweetwaters site.
Well, I went and picked up a new JC in gold. Weighs about 8lbs. Neck dive is there a little bit, but nullified almost completely with a wide strap and suede backing. This is a newer one, made in China and it's really great. It's been about 15 years since I've owned a JC, and to my memory, this one seems a bit nicer and less clunky feeling than the Korean one I had years ago. The finish is great and is a real improvement,as I was hoping. It's less of a yellow gold, a little brighter looking maybe. And the finish on the back is all stained maple instead of black. Got it out on the road for a weeks worth of shows, no back up bass...but I don't think I'll need a 2nd. Thoughtd I'd share incase anyone is interested. Also, fits in a Reunion Blues Continental bag, albeit a bit tight.
Chris: Yes, just what you said - that looks more gold colored, less yellow, and the back show more grain, and is less dark than my 1989 model. I think yours looks better than mine. Looks more like the original Gibson Les Paul Signature basses from the 1970s. A nice improvement!
Loving my Jack Casady! Been putting it too good use with my 60's cover band. The punch, deep bass, yet clear tone is killer.
Jack uses and recommend Dean Markley Blue Steels. I like DR Hi Beams. Others have their own favorites. In my experience, whatever your favorite strings are sound "ever so much more so" on a JC due to the low z pickup.
Yeah the Chinese ones are pretty light brown on the back from the ones I've seen, I like the look of the darker ones. The newer ones are light brown and show lots of wood grain. I saw one that was very very dark at the back, like a deep brown, but didn't take note of where it was made. Best Jack Casady I've ever played.
I need to grab a 20th Anniversary before they get scarce. My goldtop has been my go to for almost 2 years at this point.
This bass may be wonderful, but I've never understood the adulation that Jack Cassidy garners. Perhaps someone could enlighten me.
I've had my 20th Anniversary for a year now. I had a Silver Burst for about 5 years, and flipped out when I saw the Red trans finish! I can not tell the difference between the Silver Burst I had which was Korean made and the new one which is China made. I have the new one set up exactly as the old one; feel the same; play the same; sound the same!
This thread is the wrong place for that. Go over to the "Bassists" forum and search his name there: You'll find lots of threads about him, along with YouTube links and other recommendations. Be sure to search for "Casady" -- though you might also try "Cassidy" because it is such a common misspelling. BTW, the JC bass is great whatever you think of the player. (And for that matter, I think the player is great whatever you think of the bass.)
I'll be giving mine a play this weekend. Love the tone and feel of the bass. I have the anniversary edition, but I'd love to get a gold one too-- so cool!
