who, in your oppinion , produces the best custom basses? ( if they have a website please give a link )
Hello... there is no right answer to your question on that.. all of the custom builders out there are great! Some Private Luthiers are like Tim Salas Matt Schmill Dave Pushic Bone etc.. etc.... but all of them are fantastic basses.. it all depends on what you want and the prices that they give you.
That depends on how custom you want it. For ultra custom, that means, you can be the "designer" then www.dpcustom.com (David Pushic) For semi customs you have plenty of choices: Conklin Fodera (www.fodera.com) Great but Expensive Matt Scmill Acacia Salas Fender (LOL.... ) For fixed options customs: www.carvin.com The construction is very good, but the pickups are another story, and you cant customize that. There are several on the web. I can recommend you check www.luthiersaccessgroup.com
I like http://www.brubakerguitars.com - I have three of em. I also owned a Bone fretless and one of Matt Schmill's early basses (#002-07). Custom basses are pretty unique and cool.
As Dark Mazda suggests, asking about "the best" in anything bass/music related is pointless because it's all about taste. I haven't tried them all by a long shot, but the nicest playing, best sounding, custom I've had the pleasure to play is an R Bass by Ray Rogers. He used to work in Carl Thompson's shop. Some of his work resembles the single cutaway design used by Fodera and Ken Lawrence. You can see some of his work here - http://www.angelfire.com/tn/briansbass/page9991.html A lot of these guys are members of www.luthiersaccessgroup.com where you can have your spec's bid on by several luthiers.
If you have 4,000 bucks and four years to wait, get a Carl Thompson, if i wasn't a poor 14 year old i'd do it. Carvin's are awsome if you dont have those things. i've estimated that if i make 20 bucks a week i can get a CT by the time im 22.

i don't know, but from my experience conklin is a pretty totally custom builder too . you can pick everything about the instrument - body style, woods, # of strings, electronics, etc.
http://www.bonebasses.com/ I used to own the flame maple top 4 string fretless on the photos page. It was a very interesting and good sounding bass that I got from eBay for $675! Too bad I'm a lousy fretless player. fc
WOW! You've got a pic of Stanley Clarke fingering one of your basses, and Roger Sadowsky playing another!
David King Builds what you want, as long as you keep your head to yourself http://www.kingbass.com/ Gary Watts gets raves too: http://www.wattsguitars.com/
Hanewinckel basses: www.hanewinckelguitars.com (also www.hguitars.com, easier to type I love my 6, and it is, as Pete took to calling it, "Super-Custom". You can call him up and work on the design of your bass together.
