How do you create a custom foot board with push button switches? Has anyone done this before?

I have seen some pros use a board with just labels and push button switches and the effects are in a rack on the side stage or it is part of the bass/gtr rig.

I think I know HOW you COULD do it, but i'm not sure...
You could get a board or whatever kind of material and put it on the bottom, and then separate each pedal, and drill some holes right above where you would step on them on another piece of the material. Then put some kind of metal rod inbetween the holes, but make sure that it stays. And glue, or tape, whatever the sides so it won't fall apart. But make sure that you can get back into it. Then all you would have to do is to step on one of the rods. Then label each rod/switch.
    I think that would work...
