I was looking to get a new neck for a p bass. I'm looking to get a thicker or deeper neck but still keep the same width at the nut. Does anyone know a business that does this or is this something any luthier can do?

warmoth.com , yes a luthier should be able to help you if you can't find what you want from Warmoth.

They only make same spec necks.

Check out USACG or Soulmate Guitars. USACG is like Warmoth with more profile options, and Soulmate will build you almost anything neck-wise.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure between one of them I can get what I'm looking for.

An Allparts jazz bass neck I have on a bass is about 3/32" thicker than my Fenders neck. My Warmoth neck is thicker than the Allparts neck. I don't have that bass with me to measure for you though.

That kind of where im stuck at is I know I want thicker but im not sure how much. Was the 3/32 very noticeable?

Yes its very noticeable, the Fender neck is uncomfortable for me, It gives me hand cramps in the big muscle at the base of my thumb. I can play the Allparts neck all night with no problems. The Warmoth is even more comfortable than the Allparts.

I get cramps at the base of my fingers (upper palm). I was thinking if I had a thicker neck it would more conformable for my hand. Right now my thumb usually is close to the top of the neck.

I have never heard of anyone getting cramps there. I prefer a thick neck because I have really thick hands. I have a hard time touching my thumb to my index finger keeping both of them straight, so a thick neck means I can keep my hands more open.

I have the same problem with my hands that you mentioned. Feels like my hand is too balled up. My thinking was a thicker neck would mean less strain on my hand.

Oh ok, In that case I'm pretty sure it will help.

Doesn't get fatter than a Jazz bass I built. I did it as an experiment to see how comfortable a really thick neck would feel. It's actually comfortable, but I will most likely take it down some more.

Any ideas on where to start as far as measurements? I dont have much experience with this sort of thing. That does look pretty think. Nice figure in the wood

Lol that thing isn't pretty thick, its a louisville slugger.

I measured mine with a digital caliper from the back of the neck to the top of the first fret

    Squier VM Jazz is 0.793
    Fender P neck is 0.832
    MightyMite Jazz 0.862
    Allparts Jazz is 0.913
And just for grins, the Jazz in the picture measures in at 1.075
I don't have the Warmoth here to measure, but its slightly thicker than the Allparts. It has a 1/4" thick ebony fingerboard though, so I don't know for sure if its a standard thickness or if its different with the material. You can always call them and ask.

It may not seem like the Allparts neck is all that much thicker than the VM jazz until you wrap your hands around them. I hope this at least gives you a rough idea as to where to start.

...although some are better at it than others, I'd think.

Also the price point between what a builder would charge to make a neck would probably be substantially higher than a parts manufacturer.

Sure, but before I'll buy a neck from warmouth I'll pay a bit extra.

Have you had problems with Warmoth? The one neck I bought from them is outstanding, and every time I ordered parts the service was great.

I've never ordered from them. I know all the options I want expect for the thickness. After hearing what you had to say about it I'll probably order through them. If nothing else it will give me a starting point to make future decisions. I have a lakland that I love but I can only play it for so long because the neck is to thin for me. Going to call them tomorrow and see if they can make a thicker one for me once I figure out exactly how I want it. Kind of a shame because its bound with block inlays and its really nice looking

A refret with Jumbo frets may be worth looking into. It would increase the distance from the back of the neck to the top of the strings.
