I've always wanted a Rick, but since it's over €2000 + a 2 year waiting list here in Belgium, I'm looking for the next best thing. I'm searching for a similar sound, more than the looks.

Are there any factory basses that have an element configuration like the Rick (one of them close to the neck) ?

I also know someone in Belgium who builds basses. Would it be so easy to ask him to make a bass with the same element configuration + similar wood as a Rick or are there other factors that contribute to the sound ?

I'm looking for a driving, powerful sound as can be heard on the faster songs of the Editors.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

  3. Alembic used to sell custom Ric pickups. Not sure if they still do or not.

  4. a bass that sounds similar to a ric IMO (with the neck pup soloed) is the(CIJ) Fender '51 R.I.(or the "Sting" sig.) It is an ash body, maple neck bass but,it is pretty bright and with a set of roundwound strings and the tone control maxed..it should put you in the same neighborhood(that clanky growl)..not perfect but,..you know...I had one at one time, and the Ric-like sound is what sold me..I have since sold it because I have 2 Ric's('82 4001 & '04 4003) and a MM Sterling and it was'nt getting the playin time. It is a very well made, good sounding bass at a good price and available just about everywhere..could'nt hurt to try it for yourself

Oddly enough, I can get closer to my Ric's sound with my Peavey T-40 than any of my other basses. Totally different woods, pup style, construction, etc, but that's how it works out.
