Custom Pickups

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by Bigunslinger, Jun 2, 2001.

  1. Would it be OK to put two J pickups (1 at the neck and1 at the bridge) on a bass Guitar with a P Pickup?

It would be okay, from a technical perspective. Remember, if you're mixing different brands that there is no industry standard for pickup phase and polarity. Plus, there is no standard for how the wires are color coded.

Another problem can arise from putting on new pickups where their impedance is different from the existing P pickup. This is even more true if you try adding actives to an existing passive. The active shorts out the passive and loads it down.

A big reason you don't often see basses with more than 2 pups is that pickup experts tend to think "more is less." What seems, logically, to give you more and better sounds actually ends up worse. If you add all sorts of pickups, knobs and switches, they find you probably won't get a zoo of good tones. But, you can always try.
