Customizing '69 Ampeg BT25

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by BlacknWhite, Dec 6, 2018.

  1. I've been in the tinkering mood lately so decided to dig out the old Ampeg BT25 and get it up to gigging standards. I took it to my tech a couple years ago and he went through it and replaced some caps and what not. Played great for a about 6 months and then just started farting out and losing volume. Forgot about it until recently and dug it out, opened it up and eventually found a bad solder. Sounds great again so thought I'd give it a bit of a face lift. Decided not to go factory as I never plan on selling so going to give it a bit of a different look lol. I've got the amp its self all cleaned up and the rat fur stripped off the case just waiting for my tolex to come in tomorrow. Here's the progress so far. Will post the finished product next week.

  2. I like the color. You won't miss it in a crowd. Will you be changing the color of the hardware too?
  3. I was considering replacing the chrome corner caps with black ones to accent the green.
  4. Yes but, you might want to do the same to the handle to keep with your black accents. Really want to see this when you have it done.
  5. Yeah for sure the handle covers will be done as well. I might just spray them all matte black with some good metal paint. I'll tag you in the post when its finished so you can check it out. Thanks for the input!
  6. You may want to try black bumper and trim paint. It gives a flat black vinyl look.

  7. New tolex has arrived. Spraying the hardware matte black and maybe get the tolex going later.

Getting those two front knees right are the hardest part of the retolexing.

If you can find a local powder coater, they can save you some work on the corners and provide you with a tough finish.

  11. Thankfully my wife is a master with stuff like this lol. She's done a couple tolex jobs for me already. I usually do all the wiring and woodworking jobs and she makes it look pretty haha.

  12. Sneak peak. Tolex on just making a few finishing adjustments. Hardware is painted and goes on in the morning. Bolt the amp back into the chasis and I'll upload the end result

    That is some green-ass tolex!

  14. Hell yeah lol. Anyone can have a black Ampeg I figured what the hell. When all the black hardware and handles are on it should tame the green a bit haha

  15. Pretty much done. I can't find my camera so I had to use my phone to take these. This is pretty much the end result just a couple more small tweaks. Also went with a gloss black instead of matte. I'm pretty happy with the results.

    Good job!

Lighter colours like this are harder to do as flaws show up more than with black.

  17. Thanks man. I have to give credit to the wife though lol. I did all the electronic repairs and sprayed the hardware. She made it look pretty.

  18. I like this a lot. It's stands out like a neon green alligator. At least you will always know whose this is in a heard. Now you need to seek out a cab, and do the same to match it up with.

  19. I was already considering doing it to my Traynor 410! Lol
  20. That would really personalize it. Like the OP's I would do the hardware in flat black.
