cutting pickup magnets ...getting rid of the dust

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by wilser, Jul 4, 2005.

  1. Hello,
I am experimenting with pickups. Cutting Alnico5 rod magnets, I get a lot of magnetic dust stuck to the pieces. How can I get rid of these? Maybe using a stronger magnet?

You must be careful not breath the dust while cutting, wear a mask, its very harmful to breath in the dust. #2. hopefully this dust is not for the most part, stuck to the PU, take a piece of ferrous material and run it over the area, the magnetic particles should be attracted to the piece of iron or what ever else you have to pick up these particles. that should get rid of most of it....hope that helps. by the way you cannot use a stronger magnet to attract away the particle stuck to the poles, that will demagnetize the poles. you might have to wipe each one with a small damp piece of cloth that you can throw away.
