Has anybody tried this combo? I put a of set long scale EXL170-5 strings on my 55-94 strung through the bridge and noticed that the B and E strings just barely fit. The taper starts halfway through the nut. It seems to play okay but I'm wondering if I need to go with super long scale strings for the Lakland.

From my experience with D'Addario strings, you'll need to the super long scale on any 35" scale instrument or on a 34" scale bass using the string-through-the-body option.
  3. I just put on a set of EXL170-5SL (super long) on my Lakland JO-5 35" scale, strung through the body. I had to trim 4 strings between and 1-1/2" and 3". The A string did not have to be trimmed.

My experience is that the longer scale strings have greater tension, which is great for the B string. The D'Addarios nickels I put on last night had greater tension than the Fodera stainless that came off, and I thought they were tight.
