D'Addario Slowounds vs XLs

Discussion in 'Strings [BG]' started by Wattoosi, Jan 4, 2002.

  1. I just put new XL's on, got intonated and had the action lowered on my bass and really love the phat lows with plenty of defined mids... These are nickle plated strings and I was wondering what the difference between pure nickle roundwounds would be? Thanks!

The only difference Ive noticed between XL's and Slowounds is the XL's seem brighter when theyre new.Slowounds are a little more mellow right out of the box.

    Imo theyre both great strings.
  3. Thanks, cool, the XL's don't seem overly bright, at least with my rig and eq settings so maybe I'll go with 'em for a while!

The EXL and Slowounds are both nickelplated steel. To my ears, the EXL are brighter and have a more defined midrange. Visually, Slowounds have different colored silk wraps at the headstock (Red, Blue, Black, Green). The EXL are usually a lot cheaper too. I just bought some EXL165 super longs from an online store that went out of business and paid $9 a set. Normally, you can get twin packs of EXL for about $22 online before shipping.
