In the past year or so D. Lakin Basses kind of fell off the map and frankly so did Dan. In an effort to restore his health, he took some time off. He wants to go back to basses but is all about doing amps too....He wants them to be all tube, 100/300 watt head and cab systems....thoughts???

    Lakin Amp.

  2. If it sounds great, then it will be great!

Gotta say though That The 410 is a pretty tired old design now.

In both the 100W and 300W tube amp brackets there are a plethora of existing designs that are deeply entrenched in the psyches of bass players. You would have to go a long way to outclass the SVT and V4 amplifiers. I hope Dan is successful in his foray into amplifier manufacture, and I certainly hope his health problems are behind him. It’s no use running a successful company if you don’t have the health to enjoy it. I do like the white tolex but I fear it could be easily marred.

  6. It seems like he's having some real issues getting any products out the door. I wish him success but it really isn't worth thinking about until he's much further along in the process.

  7. Are they still making basses?

He should check with David Nordschow.

  10. I'm sure it would be great, as I own 3 Laklands (two from dan's era I believe).... but, when I think about going back to that kind of weight/bulk - - it's an instant turn off. Again, I'm sure it'll be great.... but, it's going to have to be extra extra impressive in order to be successful, IMHO.

that being said..... I'm still interested!

He already "engineered" some Fender designs, might as well "engineer" some Ampeg designs.

    Lol. This.

A really expensive, boutique tube amp right now doesn’t make a ton of sense. Sure, a few will buy it, but I wouldn’t base my career on it....

Seems to be the sweet spot in tube heads right now is mid (120-200) wattage. Or should be anyway, 100 is usually not quite enough, 300 is heavy and expensive. Of course, getting the right tubes to output in that range can also be an issue. My VB2 takes 6 x EL34s to make around 200 watts. I had ordered a Fargen head years back that was 4x 6L6 supposed to be about 120 watts, but it got smashed my UPS and bad packing :(

I think Mesa hit close to optimum with the 250-watt, 29-pound Prodigy.

If I wanted an all-tube amp, that’s where my money would go.

I need to check that one out again, but I got the VB2 for $400, don;t think I'll get that kind of deal on the Mesa :)

Having just spent a small fortune on custom 400 watt all tube amps I'd be hesitant to buy another boutique 300 watter but knowing what he has done with basses I'm sure I'd be tempted!!!

I got a VB2 for $349 at GC. It was OK, but I flipped it.
