Dancing Bass Players: I need more examples!

Discussion in 'Bassists [BG]' started by Brozzy, Jan 9, 2017.

  1. My wife says I am too stoic and ungroovy when I play. Granted, the only times she has seen me on the low end have been in Praise & Worship.

Still, I could afford to probably relax and unwind a little, even in church.

I found a great example of a dancing bass player, the dearly departed Bobby Raymond of Spiral Starecase, famous for their hit "I Love You More Today Than Yesterday."

    Check out his footwork here:

I showed Bobby to my wife and told her I am going to begin rehearsing to achieve his dancing greatness. She smiled sadly, yet again . . .

Anybody else have any examples of dancing bass players?

    Abraham Laboriel comes to mind.

Rio Funk is where it's at. The whole tune is absolute gold, but that bass solo at 4:40 takes the cake.

Spiral Starecase. Haven't thought of them for years! I was friends with drummer Vinnie Parello's ex-wife, Vivian, years ago. Beautiful girl. Lost touch with her. Early on they played in El Monte, CA as a local band.

But, I get a kick out of the subject: Dancing Bass Players. As a bassist, I've said for many, many years that bassists don't dance. Of course, I meant dancing while not playing. Watching these videos only reinforces my belief. We bassists can't dance period, whether it's on the dance floor or the stage!

Not as wild as the above, but Duck was known as a very good dancer and would throw some subtle movements in his stage presence.

if you're not feeling the moves, it might be better just to take a few steps here and there, smile when appropriate and do some eye contact with your audience.

Or if his lower half isn't cooperating he can just do the chicken head groove.
