First post! I did a quick search on Danny Wilson and didn't come up with a lot. I've been trying to findout who he has played with besides Lorber. His work on Water Signs blows me away and I'd like to get some more recordings if I can. Thanks, Rob
Danny Wilson played football (soccer ) for Brighton & Hove Albion and was a hard-working but intelligent midfield player who went on to play with more famous clubs and progres ed to management! He is now manager of Bristol City http://www.fortunecity.com/wembley/oakwell/142/managers.htm#Danny Wilson
He's also, apparently, a bass harmonica player: http://www.bassharp.com/ Unfortunately, that doesn't help me at all.
Dan Wilson plays catcher for the seattle mariners. Edit: check this out: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS70307061735&sql=Bgifwxqe5ld6e
Water Signs,Wizard Island (A MUST ! Listen),and Galaxian are the only things that I know of that he has done with the early Jeff lorber Fusion Band other than seeing him hanging around the Portland,Oregon area with Nathaniel Philips and some other former members of the group Pleasure"he does on occasions, plays with local bands/artist and yes he still a monster player
Can you still get recordings of these? I have Water Signs on tape, but the only stuff I have from the other 2 is what's on the collection CD.
If you have Kazaa you may be able to download some of Jeff's early material as mention in the thread. I will try to find other resources for you if I can. .......Stay in touch.
That's a good idea. I wonder why I haven't thought of that. I'll take a look when I get home tonight.
I have been searching for Danny for a long time. I havent responded to forums in the past. Really because I wanted to preserve Dannys privacy. I was a roommate of Dannys in 1989 at Fort Riley Kansas in the US Army. I was a Bass player for the First ID band, and Danny had OjT'd(on the job training) at the time. Danny basically got to Fort Riley under a different mos and then tried out for the Band. Danny was amazing. He wasnt real good at reading music, but that didnt matter. Danny just heard the progressions and would play the groove. Really incredible. I sucked compared to Danny. So Danny informed me he recorded on Wizard Island, and Watersign. Danny also said he had recorded on another track, but I am not sure what. I had asked Danny why he joined the Army and he said it was to get away from a woman. Seriously Danny was awesome to listen to. He played in the quartet. Long sad story short. Danny was discharged from the Army because of a Crack addiction. It was Sad. Danny had pawned all his stuff, and I dropped him off on a corner in Junction City kansas on his last day in the Army. I have hoped for many years that Danny beat his addiction and was back in the scene. If anyone knows how he is or if hes ok that would be great to know. Funny I was like 19 when I met Danny. I remember asking him when he started playing. Danny said he was at a concert listening to (currently cant remember) and two weeks later he was onstage playing with him. I miss Danny and wish only the best for him.
My drummer friend Enrique, introduced me to Jeff lorber's music, and thereby to the inimitable Danny Wilson. He was a monster player on that music man Stingray Bass!
The tone he got with that bass on those records was so thick, sweet, and dirty; to me that is the quintessential Musicman Stingray tone, and frankly I'm not really really a Stingray guy, but when I listen to those Danny Wilson bass lines, it makes me want to go out and get a sweet 4 string maple fretboard Stingray and funk the jazzy scheisse out of it!
In 1979 or 80 my college student organization brought in Jeff Lorber Fusion for a concert. I got myself placed on the committee responsible for greeting them and getting them settled in. After the concert we were helping them load out. I kept trying to strike up a conversation with Danny, because I had heard he had only been playing for a couple months when he got linked up with Lorber. He was not very talkative at all. He did say he hadn't been playing long and that he never put much effort into learning to read music. The talkative one was the band's saxophone player. Guy named Kenny Gorelick. A few months later, Kenny released his first solo album. Yep.....Kenny G.
I saw Jeff Lorber at Whittier College in 83. I met Danny, he had a 76 musicman stingray maple on maple black pickguard. After the show we met, got the opportunity to play the bass. He was an extremely cool cat. Very confident. I asked who was he influenced by. He didn't have any bass influences. He just liked good music. At the time Louis Johnson's career was meteoric. Danny said he wasn't influenced or intimidated by him. The thing I remember most of his live sound was his bass sounded like a "bomb" going off. He had a Googo Moogo bass cab w/15's and horns. Nothing special. Wow what a day. By the way Kenny Gorelick "G" was much more personable in those days. Jeff Lorber Dennis Bradford Marlin McClain Maurice Lucas Kenny Gorelick Danny Wilson
Danny Wilson, along with Pleasure’s Nate Phillips,is the main reason why I bought a Stingray...I literally wore out those Lorber records, and I still listen a lot to them! Here is my tribute to water sign
Thank you! I tried to keep the spirit of the bassline, but you end up addin’something different, just because I can’t play like Danny he was (is!) a beast
