    All the sites I see for dating Fender basses seem to apply to American and Japanese models. I read a few suggestions about mrgearhead.com and it directed me to an official Fender site that says my Mexican serial number should be "MZ0+ 5 DIGITS", but mine is six digits. It's MZO171710. Any suggestions?

    I think yours would be made in 2000 . I could be wrong. I always thought of it was M then the next letter dictates what decade. E.g. on my jazz it's MN7 so that's mexico 1997.

    edit: on second thought, i'd say either a 2000 or 2001-i haven't read up on the dating parts with regards to basses made after 2000.

    It is a 2000
    M=mexico
    Z=year 2000 and up
    0=2000

    I have a 2000 fretted jazz, and it's serial number starts the same way :hyper:

    Mine says MN6***** so it's safe to assume it's a '96.

    Does it have a one-piece pickguard/control plate? Another dead giveaway for a 96.

    MN6... can only mean a MIM 196.

    Communication, don't you know that that's the key to any dating relationship? ;)

  8. I came in here to make that joke. I kinda figured someone'd beat me to it. :p Ah well, I'll just let the slapping and fingering and G-string jokes fly of their own accord. Carry on.

    Yes :) Inthis case, the N would mean 1990's, the 6 means 1996

    My 1999 is MN9********

    The 2002 is MZ2*******

    Of course, if my basses were women, I would date them too :D

    I just had to get that in!!

    Well, I already know it's a MIM, I just wanted to clarify the year made which is about right because I did buy it in '96 or '97 or thereabouts.

    One would be three years old, the other is six, and you're gonna date them? :confused: Eww!

    Unless there's such a thing as 'bass years', something like dog years....
