Opinions on the dbx 166XL rack compressor please. Any suggestions on a quality rack compressor? Thanks!
A lot has been written on the dbx ... do a search. I own the dbx160A, and it is perfect ... noiseless, brilliant minimalist design, absolutely correct controls.
dbx is the only cheap compressor I would use. They are very quiet, have a smooth compression, and you're not going to find anything even close in its price range.
DBX is a great brand. I use the 160X. The 166 and 266 are sort of overkill for a bass I think. There are so many knobs, haha. I'd look for a 160A if I were you.
I own a 166xl which I use for bass. I can't compare it to other brands unfortunately, but it has worked very nicely for me so far... The noise gate and the limiter are handy, which lets you use the compressor in soft knee mode, which gives a very smooth and even compression. I only use the one side (mono), but it can be used in recording for stereo stuff too for the price, you can't beat it!
