de afwerking mk6-6s & mk6-g6 - blablas is doing a double build

Discussion in 'Luthier's Corner' started by blablas, Sep 15, 2015.

  1. The building urge is here again. :)
I'm going to endeavor on a double build and a new body design.

This will be the mk6 series and will be inspired on the Ovation Deacon body shape.

The plan is a lefty shortscale 6 string, basically a bass VI with a more bass player friendly string spacing, this one will be for myself.
The second one will be a right-handed guitar for a family member who's building me a tube preamp.

I still need to work out the design for them but I know where I'd like to go with it.

Right now I'm making an inventory for the needed parts and will soon start ordering them.
also bought the first chunks of wood for the fingerboards and bodies.

That design frightens me! Looking forward to seeing it pan out though.

  3. That's the original Ovation design, not my take on it.:smug:

  5. Do you plan on resizing and contouring it more á la a Klein or keep it a bit more chunky like the original?

  6. In principle I want to keep the original Deacon shape but with a look and feel that's based on my own design ideas.
Giving it the same sort of twist I did with my take on the SG design.

I'm going to try not to go the Klein direction which I think looks too square and big (not that I don't appreciate the Klein shape, it's just an design direction I don't want to go).

  7. Finally done something with the design of the body today.
It's not fully there yet but gives an indication where I want to go, I've had it for now and I'm first going to let sink in what I've got at the moment.

Your take on Ovation shape looks better than the original.

  12. Refined the body shape and now it's to my liking. Also designed the headstock.

Now it's waiting for the wishes from the customer for further designing of the guitar version.

I see influences of Parker on the headstock. These two out of the box-shapes look nice combined.

  14. I was sort of thinking of the Parker headstock but tried to do my own thing, afterwards I did a search and luckily mine looks seriously different from the Parker ones.

Very nice. Looks like there will be some neck dive, however.

  16. We'll see, most of the time I play siting down so neck dive is not very high on my bother list. Also given that due to the design most of the body mass is at the bridge side of the body I'm not too worried about neck dive.

True about the body mass, and the headstock is low-mass.

  18. Did some refining of the headstock design.

Placed the tuners closer together and added a lower wing to the headstock, looks more balanced to me now and now it can be put in a guitar hanger, given the body shape it probably won't fit a guitar stand.

I like this much better than the previous design. Definitely more balanced.

The new headstock attached to the rest.

    This is it, happy!
Bass template is done, still the guitar to go.
