Apologies if there's already a thread, but I couldn't find one. I've just watched the Deadwood movie, set 10 years after the excellent 3-season series. I was hugely impressed ... great writing, excellent performances from the entire reunited cast, and a fitting closure for all who were so disappointed when the original series was shut down. Sure it would've been great to see more, another ten seasons covering the intervening years, maybe the hope of future movies to continue the tale, but I'm happy with what we got. Any other hoopleheads out there?
I like that actor. He had a brief role in Game of Thrones that I wish lasted longer. I'll have to check this out. Thanks @Oddly. -Mike
Mike, I will warn you if you've never seen any of the series that it's not for the prudish or faint-hearted or easily offended. I know you enjoyed Game Of Thrones, so you should be ok but be prepared for some serious cussin'.
I can only answer for myself. I never finished Breaking Bad ... gave up after season 2. I've watched the 3 seasons of Deadwood 3 times ... and will probably watch it all again!
Ha. In my opinion Deadwood the series is up there in the upper tier of best TV shows of all time along with BB. And yes, Deadwood raises profanity to an art form.
OK...I have heard that about Deadwood. Pretty sure it's a free stream on Amazon Prime. I will give it a go.
I'm soooooo happy this movie got made; Deadwood is one of my very favorite shows of all time. The movie didn't completely knock my socks off, but I have no complaints, it was a fitting end. There were some moments of pure genius, like the cold open of Jane on her horse, it was almost like she was "breaking the 4th wall" and speaking directly to the audience. Deadwood must look pretty good on an actor's resume. Watch any of the top "prestige series" and you are practically guaranteed to see one or more Deadwood alum: Game of Thrones, House of Cards, Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Lost, Breaking Bad, Ray Donovan, Bosch, etc.
Sorry I wasn't clear. I've watched the 3 episodes on amazon prime. I wanted to know when the movie is free. Probably in a year or so.
I loved the series - at least three times through it for me. I found the movie to be a bit flat. Not exactly sure why - maybe it was missing the fun of all the back-stabbing between the locals because they joined together to focus on the "outsider" (trying to avoid any spoilers) or perhaps there just wasn't enough time to fully explore all of the stories that needed to be brought up to date. I guess it just felt very superficial compared to the series. Yeah they do go a bit overboard with the language. I can make sailors blush, but it got a little tedious even for me.
I thought the series was great. I've seen some interviews with some of the actors. They all loved working on both the series and the movie and I think it shows. I had no idea that Geri Jewell actually had cerebral palsy. Saw two interviews with her and she is an absolute hoot. I thought the movie wrapped it all up pretty well.
The foul language never bothered me, for two reasons. First, Big Lebowski is my all time favorite movie, so I'm no stranger to the F-bomb. Second, David Milch is such a good writer! Having watched the entire series 3 or 4 times (including a couple of times with subtitles) I can say with conviction that the quality of the dialog approaches Shakespearean caliber at times.
Crude language is used too often in movies and TV as a writer's crutch. You can't write a good story but hey you know how to drop a whole lot of f-bombs! The first time I tried Deadwood I gave up after a couple episodes because it seemed like the profanity was being used as described above: A crutch for lousy storytelling. But I kept reading about how good the show is etc etc so I tried it again. After about the 4th episode I was hooked on the story. The profanity moved to the background and became just "blah blah blah".
I tried watching the movie but only made it through about 25 minutes. Is it a movie that stands on its own, should I give it another shot, or do I need to watch the series before I attempt the movie again?
I suppose the movie would stand on it's own (kind of has to) and they do provide a few flashbacks to moments in the series to provide some of the necessary backstories that support certain plot lines - but the backstories to the backstories are not presented. But I think there are a lot of references that non series watchers wouldn't get. It doesn't make the movie any less watchable, they just won't understand the full weight of the moment. I can recount at least 4 or 5 plotlines that will not fully be appreciated by non-series watchers, but there was one very specific scene near the end of the movie (with Trixie, Swerengen and Jewel - nuff said) that will have little meaning to non-series watchers, but was actually a pretty huge reveal to fans of the series.
