Dean Edge Fretless basses

  2. I have an Edge 4 fretless. It used to have frets, I had the slots filled with maple.

    mine plays awesome, I have a rosewood board, so I use flatwounds. It has a real mellow, smooth tone, tons of mwah! It sounds a lot like an upright.

    If you had an ebony board with some roundwounds, I'm sure you would have a whole different animal.

    As far as how it plays, the neck is thin and fast. And I can get some nice tones from the Passive EMG's.

    I played sevral Dean's today. I am in the market for a fretless also. I was not impressed at all. The fretless 5 was the worst sounding one I tried. The Ibanez, Warwick, Carvin, Frender and Yamaha (used) sounded better. I liked the Carvin the best. I'll be looking to buy one I think. Hope this helps. Later Joe
