Decals, for the fun of it...

I buy myself on occasion decal waterslide paper. I have fun. I used to get a thrill trying to replicate Fender logos, but thankfully I got bored with it. Now I made my own, named Hintoa.

I've been experimenting with ink-filled decals (got it down pat now.) and solid colour ink-jet versions. Lately, I've been trying to perfect tortoise pattern fill, to variable success. The tricky thing with making tort decals if you never know what will translate onto a headstock with no painting and with various amounts of visible grain. So far, I think I'm getting there. I'd be delighted to describe my techniques and what programs I use and what settings, but after a long day at work, I just want to collapse right now. I'll write it in a later post.

Just curious about other people's decal creations. Here's a sampling of my creations, including some alternative names for famous bass models. Haven't found one for Precision Bass yet, though... These are test decals with ink runs, or dust particles in them...

This project is the next one coming up. Just need to find a cheap, but decent lefty strat body with no holes for the vibrato screws done...

    Sweet! Those are great!

  3. Nice work, and I'm looking forward to reading about your techniques - I've got a project that will need a custom decal.

Okay, for metallic ink/paint decals, here's a post I made months ago in another thread... I find this method is the best for those who don't have an ALPS type of printer, and who are using either an inkjet or colour laser printer. There are several places one can get quality waterslide decal paper, Blinggasm.com is an inexpensive place (shipping is cheap within the US), there are several Chinese vendors, and one Korean vendor that I now use to get my decal paper from.

There are plenty of programs you can use, I use Adobe Fireworks, a discontinued program, but I find it the easiest to work with. Inkscape, Photoshop, Illustator, Corel Draw, there are plenty of others out there...

Ok, starting to feel like I have really just been teased! Waiting for a detailed write up with parts list. I have a brand new logo that I really do not want to be just black or white! Educate us please. . . step by step for nimrods like me!

I'm at work for the moment, earlysecond, so I'll have to get back to you.

I will say upfront, you need to ensure you have ultra-high resolutions of the decals you want to make. We're talking like 2000, 3000 pixel range. Better, if you have them vectorized.

Also, I posted upthread about how to add metallic paint to your decals.
