The energy and skill to jump around and pump out those notes in an aggressive pick style with attitude and image is a skill, IMO. I often watch that live London show from 1977:

Junkie, heroin, a fad? how about epidemic. Heroin is not cool.

However Dee Dee is one of the All time Rock N Roll Great songwriters. He is a great bass player in his own right. The rapid all out passionate approach. Playing balls to the wall the whole show. He wasn't the most technical but he was tight and on point.Dee Dee is really the backbone, the spinal chord of the Ramones. Kind what Izzy was to GNR. All of the Ramones best songs during Dee Dees time and during CJs time were written by DEE Dee.

Dee Dee is one of my biggest influences. I was a finger style player. He was the reason I started to use a pick. Along with bassists like Tommy Stinson, Duff Mckagan and Paul Siminon. But Dee Dee is why I started playing with a pick 5 years ago after playing with my fingers for years. I rarely EVER use my fingers anymore.

This is why he was not "average" but great. See also: Tony Lombardo from early Descendents.

Tony Lombardo.. very on point agressivenattack bass player. All down strokes like Dee Dee but was more technical as far as his technique. Was a e good bass player. Milo goes to college. Those bass lines were perfect

  12. During the 40's and 50's a lot of the jazz players did dope because Charlie Parker was a junkie and he was unbelievable, lot's of people thought he got it from the dope, killed a lot of great players back then and it still does to this day, heroin turns people into slimy liars, not good stuff.

Yup? Made a bracelet out of fishing weights and practiced with it. I actually made a thread about it a couple years back. People just talked sh*t

Ironically after being a Ramones fanatic forever, Karl Alvarez is the reason why I started playing with my fingers and rarely use a pick.

He got a mention on the latest episode of the new Twilight Zone.
Steven Yeun's character is an extreme traveler & says that one of the bucket-list items for an extreme traveler is to kiss Dee Dee's tombstone in Hollywood Forever cemetery:

I've been there & seen it, but not kissed it:

Johnny is also at Hollywood Forever, and so is the urn of Rozz Williams:
