    After watching the Rocketman movie last night I did a little research and learned that Elton's band at his breakthrough Troubadour performance consisted of just himself, Nigel Olsson on drums, and Dee Murray on bass. No guitarist. I also learned that a recording was made in 1970 of a live radio broadcast featuring this lineup. Dee Murray's bass playing on this live recording is tremendous. It takes my respect for his playing to a whole new level. A highlight is his Jamersonesque funk on 'Take Me to the Pilot', which begins at the 33 minute mark.

    Find the non "re-mastered" version. Sounds even better.

    One of my favorite Elton John albums, I remember when they broadcast that in NYC. It was a few years before he let Murray do his studio albums though.

    @DanTheQuaker

    ^^^^^^^ Funny, I've just done the exact same thing and ended up listening to the same recording! ^^^^

    Check out 'Amoreena' starting at 23:45. Great bass fills etc. Sounds exactly like fretless, or is it his Jazz with flats?

    And Elton rewarded him by dumping him.

    Elton kept that band together for a good long time. Nothing wrong with wanting to try something different, especially for a songwriter as diverse as him. Bruce did it, so did Billy Joel.

    I think 11/17/70 drummer Nigel Olsson is still with Elton.
