Going to be in Denver and the California bay area (SF/Napa) for a couple days and was wondering you guys knew of any good music shops where you can play some good basses...vintage, boutique, basically someplace other than guitar center. Thanks for the help!
Try Gelb Music in Redwood City, CA - about 20 miles south of San Francisco. Lots of boutique stuff. There's a shop near San Jose (the name escapes me - I'm sure someone will chime in) that has a lot of vintage stuff, but I think most of it's behind glass and unplayable.... could be wrong. Gelb is great though, good people too.
Subbed because I live here... The Tweed Hut in downtown Vacaville(on I-80, between SF & Sacramento)is nice, but not a lot of bass stuff
its pretty dead up north of the golden gate. any of the musical instrument shops around here sell mainly guitars with a couple basses. not anything really nice, vintage or boutique up north. very disapointing
That stinks. I was hoping there's be some good local shops. Well I'll keep an eye out for pawn shops I guess! Thanks for the help guys!
Also try B Street Music in San Mateo just South of San Francisco. It will be in between San Francisco and Redwood City where Gelb is. Gelb also has a consignment shop next door. I think the other poster was talking about Guitar Showcase in San Jose. For vintage basses there is also Real Guitars in San Francisco. Not a huge selection but you can call them and ask what they have before you go.
Bass and Beyond in Sacramento, Ca. A little drive for you from the bay but well worth it, and a shop that specializes in just bass gear....check out their site bassandbeyond.net
Yes to Gelb. And Real Guitars (also the home of Gary Brawer's repair shop) though small, might be worth checking out.
RG might have one thing worth the trip, occasionally. Otherwise it's lawsuit-era Japanese basses, weird Ovation stuff, 80's Fenders, and junk.
Yeah, that's the one I was thinking about. Though, they were a little crotchety there. The guys at Gelb will give you a hug if you ask for one.
PM ME before you are in Denver, i'll make sure you are taken care of. Premier Bass Guitars is open Tuesday - Saturday, 11-6.
The alembic factory and showroom is in Santa Rosa. with some advanced notice they will welcome you and you will have many awesome basses to try out. highly recommended I have not been there in many decades but bananas at large in San Rafael used to be a great store. enjoy your visit.
Another +1 for Premier Bass Guitars in Superior: http://www.premierbassguitars.com/ I'm not aware of any other bass-centric shops in the area, or even small shops with more than your guitar-center fare.
