Radial makes a good one. So does Aguilar and Sadowsky. For other gear, a good compressor/limiter is important.

I get a great direct tone for recording with my SansAmp BDDI.

It's awesome for passive bases, Hec that's all I use is passive electronics except for my MusicMan.

It works for most any bass. Just an overall nice thing to have, both for live PA sound and for recording. Go try one! :)

The ART Tube MP makes for a great DI. Bass sounds good through it. Less than $100. Check it out.
