My fellow bassist told me that on the GK2001 head, I can plug my bass into the back of the head, instead of the front input? I only ask cause this would save a few secs. on load in time(I could have everything in my rack plugged in w/o pulling a cord around to the front).

No, you heard wrong. Unless you are using a separate preamp and going into the effects return. http://www.gallien-krueger.com/manuals/2001RB-2001RBP.pdf
Yeah, you must've heard wrong. The only thing I could think is that they're referring to the chain in/out on the back, but that's for master/slave amping.
