There are never any commercial on TV for Guitars or basses, for some reason guitar builders and companies never decided to use TV to sell their product. Closest thing is a radio advertisment for GC or sam ash.

Ibanez has tons of commericals that appeal to the younger generation. I see 'em all the time on MTV II... oh wait, those are KoRn and LiNkIn PaRk videos.

Probably because advertising on TV is pretty damn expensive, and guitars & basses are relatively specialist things - TV commercials would be wasted on a lot of the population. As such, it's probably really not worth it to do so. The companies are more likely to choose a form of advertising that targets musicians specifically, like musicians magazines.

I could be wrong, of course.

Moley is right - TV is the "scattergun" of advertising media and very wasteful!!

As has been pointed out - any sensible Marketing strategy would give more weight to ads in magazines where you can be more targeted and things like endorsements/sponsorships etc.

Smaller concerns like music shops are better off building up 'relationship programmes' with customers - so I am on lots of mailing lists and get news-sheets from the Bass Centre and Overwater - shops in the UK.

Direct Mail is a much better medium for building relationships with customers, than TV - which is mostly used for "Brand Building", rather than individual product Marketing.

    That is certainly the reason.

There is a saying in advertising that goes "Television is really cheap if you can afford it," meaning the cost per audience member is very low. But TV advertising is ten fold more expensive than any other media.

Instrument manufactors are not the only ones who stay away. Unless 20-25 percent of the audience is in your market, there is really no point in dropping the loot.

In this age of cable and a zillion specialty stations, you are seeing more and more advertisors come to TV.
