What is the difference between the sound of the jazz and the precision bass? How does Stingray sound difference to j bass and p bass?

Go to a store and try them out.

Its impossible to find a store that doesnt at least have a J and P bass in stock.

To each his own. I've had three P basses (Lull, Fender, and Lakland) and several J Basses (Sadowsky, Modulus, etc, etc). Even though I could get a bigger bang out of the J-basses by cranking everything using active electronics, none of the J's could match the P for purity of low end usable punch/thump [and maybe tone] via passive electronics.

The J's would come close, but unfortunately, I wasn't playing horseshoes.
