Hi, i have had a '93 mexican jazz bass for a couple of years but want to be educated on a few things if anyone can help with these questions....:

Whats the difference between Mexican and US made jazz bass?

If i see 'Standard Jazz Bass' does this means its a mexican one?

Is it only deluxe models that have active pickups?

Is it only US jazz basses that have thru' body strings?

Do thru' body strings make much difference anyway?

What changes have been made to the jazz bass since my '93 model? Is it worth getting a newer one?

What is best, buying a brand new mexican or a second hand american?

    Thanks for youe help

Well aside from the places their made, there is typically better materials used on the MIA's than on the MIM's. MIA's now have the s-1 switch and string through body capabilitys. Also MIAs are available with maple fingerboards.

If i see 'Standard Jazz Bass' does this means its a mexican one?

    Yes

Is it only deluxe models that have active pickups?

Yes but there are deluxe models AND american deluxe, both are active though.

Is it only US jazz basses that have thru' body strings?

    yes

Do thru' body strings make much difference anyway?

some say yes, some say no. call me old fashioned but I string through the bridge.

I'm not 100% correct but I think they messed around with pickup sizes at one time. I'm not really sure

Its your call, some MIM's kick ass, others aint so good. MIA's usually have better quality control but it may not always be the case. your best bet its try a bunch and see what you like best, despite what name is on the headstock.

    Thanks for youe help

no prob, but as others are sure to say, "next time do a search"
