Difference between Real and Fake book

  1. Short question: What is the exact differance between a Real Book and a Fake Book?

    AKAIK they're the two names for the same thing: A book with (jazz) standards.

    Yes in practice they are the same thing, although fake Books were around earlier and the concept of "faking it" at a gig is what they are about. I always presumed that the "Real" Book was a joke or pun - you already have the "Fake" book - now get the "Real" book - ha ha! ;)

    But I don't know for sure - anybody else know the actual history ?
