I remember reading somewhere that a satin finish can be obtained by sanding down a glossy finish. Is this true? And if it is what type/grit sandpaper do you use?

well, you could use really high grit like 2200 or something. It would satin it up without being too rough. Then if you don't like it, you could gloss it back up by using a polishing compund.

Hi, Going over it lightly with #0000 steel wool knocks the sheen off and makes the neck slicker. You can restore the shine with polishing compound like tmo suggested (Novus fine scratch remover works great).
