is there any difference in sound between the two? i like the idea of being able to adjust the nut height without removing strings, but the brass nut just looks badass - and the sound is what i'm used to. does the nut material make any difference soundwise on notes besides open notes? can you get just-a-nut I's anywhere? jason
The brass nut allowed for each individual string to be adjusted whereas the new composite nut is only adjustable on each end. I never noticed a difference in tone. I had the old style nut on a Thumb 4 and the new on a Corvette 5.
The brass nuts can be bought and installed on the new warwicks. The brass will give a better ringing to the open note. Stu Mac sells the nuts (adjustable that is). I have 3 warwicks forsale. One is an 88 and the other is a 92, both have brass. I also have a 98 for sell and on ebay which has the plastic nut. I like the 3 band eq on it, but would suggest a brass nut. Thanks
Brass nuts were a popular mod in the late 70s and early 80s when it was thought they added to sustain and gave open strings a tone more like the fretted notes. They rapidly fell from favor, like a lot of other brass hardware mods of the time...how much sutain do you need? Alembic was the maker that came up with the idea of an adjustable brass nut, Warwick copped it from them.
