Different Mother-of-Pearls?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by freshmeat1989, Apr 26, 2005.

  1. I have noticed in Mother-of-Pearl inlays that there a couple different shades/kinds of MOP, ranging from white to having a blue tint like the first one, and a yellower shade like the second one. Are these just different shades, or in fact different kinds of MOP.

    Thanks for any replies.
  2. I would say different materials, but i wouldnt really know.
  3. Anyone else?

Keep in mind that MOP is fairly transparent (or fairly opaque), so what you are noticing is the result of the material underneath affecting the appearance. Assuming that this is real MOP (in these cases I believe it is) you will have a certain amount of variation with any natural organic product.

Also factor in that Marcus Miller has a finish on the fretboard, while the rosewood jazz does not.
