Will have a set of one of these replacing the stock MIA's. Already have an East J-Retro preamp installed, still not getting the low mid grunt I feel I need, even if the higher frequency sounds good.

I have read about the Model J's, Ultra Jazz, and Aero's through searches, and it from what I've read, the Model J will probably be the best fit, but I would love to hear other opinions.

If you don't mid sacrificing a little bit of high end response, Model J's.

How much is "a little bit?" Is it similar to the difference of running parallel v. series? Overall happy with high end just need bottom filled out...

That is a very good question, U. I never bother with that parallel/series stuff so I wouldn't know. But it's not so hi-cut that it sounds like you turned the tweeter off in your cab, though it's noticeably not as bright as the stock MIA pickups. But the low mid is totally there and the output is pretty hot.

  5. I have the Retro J and Di Marzio Js in a fretless jazz and have P like lowend and all the highend I need. I think with EQ adjustment you will too.

I have played both the Model J and currently have an UltraJazz in the bridge of my custom bass. The UltraJazz, as a passive pickup, is very close to an active tone, with clear highs and good overall tone. The Model J is like turning the treble down a number or two and the mids up a number compared to a "standard" J pickup.

I have no direct experience with the "Area 51" pickups.
