as to why these pick ups (the Ultra Jazz series that is) are not the defacto pickup for ALL basses using "J" style single coils I'm not sure.

just got a set dropped into my J-5esque bass and good Lord Almighty!!!!

    amazing, amazing, amazing.

Without a doubt one of THE most underrated pickup on the market.

Great to hear... I've been wondering about the 5-string version, and how close it sounds to the 4-string version, which I have and love in my 71 Jazz. Sounds like a winner in 5-string also...! :bassist:

Good to know, i just ordered a set for my Squire Dlx V and i hope it makes it sound better.
What bass did you used to put the UJ pups?

one reason might be that they dont fit in a fender jazz5

they were a hot item about 6 or 7 years back... I know a lot of boutique basses built round them. I have a set in my 5 string... killer pickups.

yep, the retro fit from a set of Aero Darryl Jones Js that the bass was 'built around' wasn't easy.... well it kind of was, my good buddy is a great tech and he did it in no time but it did require a dremel and there's a little extra space on either side of the p/ups BUT well worth the cosmetic imperfections.

I dropped them into my Mollerup "That 70's Bass" 5. it's essentially a J but tweaked. ash body, birdseye neck and fingerboard.

    this is with the Aeros:

    DSC04661.

just did a session with it today and it was stellar!!!! really loving the tone.

my 5 is maple/maple on ash as well... no birdseye on that one though.

Also, Sadowsky Humbuckering Jazz pickups are custom wound by Dimarzio and closely based on the Ultra Jazz model :)

yep, I must say that I am a dweeb and when I finally heard that.... I gave in to my buddy who is a guitarist and HUUUUUGE DiMarzio evangelist who had kept bugging me about getting some.

and again, I can't say enough about how happy I am with them.

btw, I know that you've got some craaazy erb BeeBasses ( :D ) but do you have a pick of yer J 5?

I put them in more than one jazz project bass with various preamp or passive and they were great pickups. If I had a passive jazz I'd probably go that way again.

IME/O they won't give you that "raw" quality you get by soloing a real single coil.

But they certainly are super duper delicious for the more modern "scoop" tone! They gave me the best slap tone I've ever found... even without a preamp!

I know, I know.... but atleast it was a qualified technician using the dremel and not me :smug:

    Qualified technician using a dremel?
    Hmmm. . . : )

I'd love to hear some before and after clips sometime. I'm just glad that the bass is making you happy.

I've got the Dimarzio Model J's in my J-bass right now. A slight touch of growl but I'm going to wait until I slap in an Audere preamp in before deciding if I like them or not. How are the Ultra Js with preamps?

(Oh has anyone done the Dimarzio pup exchange? Wonder how easy it is :x)

They're fantastic, and Dimarzio should really consider making them in the fender size shells (I asked, and they have no plans to do this).
