I recently bought some Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups for my Marcus Fender Jazz. I also bought a J retro active preamp for it. The sound I got through my rig was originally great before I tried it out with the band. Now I really notice there is a pronounced dip in the midrange which makes the thing great for slapping but for other applications it can be a pain and also sounds almost distorted at times.

I have bypassed the onboard preamp going directly into a sansamp RBI and QSC power amp then into Ampeg classic SVT cabs. That's how I know it is the pickups rather than the John East. Could I have wired them in wrong (series/parallel problems)? They just sound very hollow and don't cut through particularly well. The bass response is massive but quite boomy and I have to cut it completely on the onboard.

Anyone else notice this hollow sound to the Ultra jazz's?
