I installed a new set of Dimarzio Ultra Jazz tonight, replacing my MIA Stock pickups. Both sound good, but I'm leaning towards going back to the stock MIA... not sure though. They each have different character. The MIAs seem a little bit throatier, whereas the Ultra Jazzes are punchier - not sure which ones I prefer at this point.

I've been reading several posts on these pickups, and seems if most people who install them are putting them on MIM basses.

Did I downgrade by replacing the pups on my MIA?

I don't think you downgraded, more of a lateral move. MiM pups blow, so just about anything is better than stock. MiJ and MiA pups are pretty decent, so there's really no reason to replace them unless you just want a different tone.
