DI's Purpose?

  1. Are these used to get the true sound of your bass, eliminating the use of an amp?
    Also, if you plug your active bass into a recording device, (ex: Tascam Portastudio in my case), will you also get the true sound of your bass.

    Bass is very hard to mic, I think because of wave length, so people use DI's. Basses also don't seem to suffer as much as other instruments which need the mic to get their natural sound. I have an old porta studio, the mic pre-amps are not so good.
    -not the worst actually, but, you won't get the "true" sound exactly.
