Here's a 2017 Reverend Mercalli anniversary bass with sky blue figured maple top. There's a well-defined discoloration in the finish near the neck joint. I'm curious as to why it might be there and is it likely to spread. It sure seems to be below the finish. Thoughts?

Before anyone suggests it; no that isn't a reflection off the side of the neck.

  3. What is it finished with? Could there be something in the neck pocket or under the pickguard causing that?

If the wood edge of the top isnt finished in the pocket, looks like moisture may have caused stain from wicking into the edgewood fibers. If it gets wet again it will spread. If it stays dry, likely not. Maybe time to seal that edgewood with sanding sealer.

Hmm. Food for thought. Thanks for the reply.

Could that be the edge of the heartwood, making it a natural feature?

  7. That seems to be very possible. Did you get the bass new and has it always looked like that?
