    I've found posts on distance which says dependant on brand, so a anybody got any suggestions on the optimal leanth of EMG-Ps from the string.

    Personally, I set 'em as close as I can get 'em without beating the strings.

    With EMG's and fender lace sensors, you can put them very close to the string. It will give you a lot of growl. The magnets in these kind of pickups are not very strong, and have no need to be. So, in this case, you will not get much magnetic dampening on the vibration of the string. If you don't mind losing some sustain, you can put regular magnetic pickups pretty close too. But it can start sounding funky. Keep it low.
