distortion/noise when using effects loop

    I've connected my Aphex Bass Xciter through my effects loop, but I get a signigantly loud signal causing a distorted/noisy tone. Am I doing something wrong?

    effects loop send -> xciter -> effects loop return mono

    any suggestions? my pre/gain peak level his lit excessivly even when turned down.

    HELP!
    should i just leave it in the pedal chain?

    if it helps, im running a SVT4-Pro into a MesaBoogie 1516b

    I would leave it in the chain, but the distortion might be being caused by the actve/passive switch on the back being in the wrong position.

    cables are fine. i've tried both passive and active. passive just quiets it, but still is distorted. the overall tone was better through the ffects loop but still was distorted.
