Distortion Pedal?

Discussion in 'Effects [BG]' started by Solarmist, Jul 30, 2012.

  1. Hey guys - I got a question on distortion.

I like the sound Krist Novoselic gets on Nirvana/Live at the Paramount DVD - so I did some checking and found he used a ProCo Rat Distortion, and a Roland (BOSS) DS-1 Distortion pedal.

I've never used a distortion pedal before, but I have tried the overdrive on my GK BL600 amp.

Dumb question alert - Will a distortion pedal sound different than the overdrive on my amp? The one on my amp makes it sound like SH!T.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks Guys

I suggest that you search: overdrive, distortion, and fuzz.

There are hundreds and hundreds of distortion, fuzz, and overdrive pedals out there. All sound anywhere from vastly different to very similar to each other. I've never thought onboard distortion or OD sounded good at all.

Go to a store and start trying pedals. Your journey is about to begin.

Well solarmist, there are many different kinds of distortions and yes they would sound different through your rig. it depends on the brand and how you set up the settings on the distortion pedal. if you want some recommendations, here are a few overdrive and distortion pedals to try out.

Digitech xbd bass overdrive/distortion pedal(a.k.a the digitech bass driver)
    MXR m-80 bass d.i+
    Xotic bb bass preamp
    Tech 21 sansamp oxford
    Darkglass electronics microtubes b3k
Ibanez pd-7 phat-hed bass overdrive pedal
    Way huge electronics pork loin
    voodoo lab sparkle drive
    Tech 21 samsamp leeds
    Tech 21 sansamp para driver
Danelectro cool cat transparent overdrive pedal

Give some of these pedals a try and see which pedal is right for you.

I highly recommend the darkglass microtubes. Expensive...but very sweet. I regret selling mine.
