I have recently tried the idea of running two channels at once. I have my clean signal that goes Kustom amp then a 2nd channel that runs to my ampeg that i get a very bassy sound out of. I'm interested in running a distortion through that channel and having it on at all times as my regular down so i want it to be subtle. I play in a hard rock band and want that gritty type of low end. so my question is what kind of distortion would be best suited for that purpose without sucking up all my low end. Any help would be appreciated i dont know much about effects and am interested in building up an effects board.
I experimented with the whole dual rig thing with one always dirty and one for all other sounds. In the end I found one rig with a clean blend got me the sound I was going for. I use an x-blender with great results. I have multiple fuzz/distortion pedals in its loop. Or you could go with a pedal with a built in clean blend. Wren & cuff offer the clean blend on all of their dirt boxes.
I also use the xotic x-blender, a great pedal that allows you to dial in your effects and clean signal beautifully. Splits the signals then re-combines them, its brilliant!
Wren and Cuff makes a very nice clean blend on their pedals. My TFR has one and it really does a nice job of blending. Others often are more like stacking clean and distortion.
I have never heard of Wren and Cuff before i will definitely check it out. I friend that plays bass told me to look at the sans amp bass driver i think made by tech 21 and the turbo rat idk what the brand is. I noticed the rat was very cheap and looked like it was for a guitar. Has anybody used it on bass. The sans amp bass driver seemed a little weird when i looked it up on line, it didnt really appear to be something you would get distortion with.
Just looked at the TFR on the Wren and Cuff website and I didn't see any clean blend knob on it. Is it a special mod? -Mark
It's a mod that Matt offers on most of his pedals. He has developed a blend that actually works. I've got one on my TFR and typically run it about 1/4 on to add a little clean bass to the mix.
The W&C pedals are a little spendy, but... they sound really good. According to people who own both, the W&C Tall Font Russian, nails the original.
I use myself a Technophobia Basscreamer. It's a dutch made tubescreamer for bass. It works like a Fulltone Fulldrive but it also has a clean blend and the sound it a bit more edgy so it cuts better through the band/mix. Controls: -gain -tone -volume -boost -clean blend -comp cut switch -footswitch effect on/off -footswitch boost on/off Technophobia; Analog Audio Solutions
I don't have a blend on my TFR and the bottom end is huge. Are you going to be running both channels together? If so, it doesn't matter if the distortion eats your bass freqs, as the Kustom will be there for you.
I run parallel rigs ("clean" and "effected") and honestly the nice thing about it is not having to worry about effects retaining low end. You're blending them anyway. I use a Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie B, and a Humphrey modded Metal Zone for grind on my effected side.
I do run both amps at once but i have it running kind of weird. My ampeg has alot of bass and low mids and i want to run the grit on that channel. The kustom has a graphic eq and i was getting a very very trebley sound out of it. I do it so i get really articulate clear high notes but then i depend on the ampeg for bottom end which is why the distortion really cant take too much bottom end from the signal.
I use my Ampeg head with a Bergantino NV610 as a full range amp. I use it either "clean" (it's an Ampeg) or with mild overdrive (Fulltone Bass Drive). I leave my GK powered rig to do the mids and highs for effects. I personally don't like the sound of clean high end mixed with distortion/fuzz, as I don't believe that they blend as well. To me the high end presence makes it sound like one is sticking out, especially if you're adding less note definition to the low end by running it through a fuzz or distortion. Maybe you'll have better results though. If you want to keep low end, I'd recommend one of the W&C units with a blend built in.
I have TFR with the blend, but I never use it. It really isn't a necessity, but is nice to have. I think its like a $15 upgrade at the time of purchase, well worth it just to have around. And yeah, Wren and Cuff pedals are not cheap. And if you look inside them, you'll see why. Oh, and the TFR sounds amazing with bass (and guitar). A good choice for what you have in mind. I use it for low-freq/high-gain distortion. It does not disappoint. (It can do high-freq/high-gain too...)
A Mesa V1 Bottle Rocket run through a Rocktron truloop mix pedal (and then blended to preference) will get you exactly the sound you want. I was looking for the same exact thing, and that's what I discovered.
Would it be worth getting a blend pedal with one channel going to my b600h and the other to a 120 crate amp? Idk if i would
