Hello fellow TBers, Soooo, I've been playing bass for about a year now, self-taught, play in the church band. I've been playing an Ashton for a year, and I'd borrowed a (seriously) heavy vox bass about 2-months before that. So I was thinking, do I deserve a new bass? I'm in my church band, and I've wanted to play upright for a while, so I looked for a bass I could do both on. I then came across the ministar basstar (playawayguitars.com). It's £215, and it can be played as a fretless travel bass (I've never had a fretless before. I've never even played one) or in the upright position with a really long endpin and a body brace that you can buy for another £30 (or on a cymbal stand), it also has a big scallop on the end of the fingerboard, to make it feel more like a double bass neck. Anyway, after a year of playing, do you think I deserve a new toy? I was also thinking about making one, so maybe I should do that, and not only save money, but also give actually making one a go. Thanks Joe
This seems like a silly question to me. I think if you feel you deserve to play a better instrument, have the money and feel that it's not going to set you back, then absolutely you deserve to have the bass you want. However, this is usually where GAS begins in the life of a bassist.
I've been playing bass for five years now. I started off on a cheap Ibanez starter bundle, and in my first two years I kept buying nicer and nicer basses and justifying them by telling myself that I deserved better instruments as my skills grew. I got into some pretty nice basses -- Warwick, a few MIA Fenders, a Music Man... I've now sold off most of those instruments and my main squeeze is a Squier. Just saying. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket then by all means spend it, but don't get caught up like I did in having the absolute latest and greatest this early in the game.
If you have to ask the question, then the answer is NO !. This is Talkbass we all deserve a new Bass.
When you reach adulthood you do not need to ask other adults if you deserve to buy something............unless of course you are married in which case the above rule does not apply. Damn it's great being single again. If I can afford it I deserve it.
Never ask TB if you should buy or deserve a new bass. we're all GASed up here so of course you get the "GET THE NEW BASS NOOOOOOOOOW" response. It's not the subjective environment for such a question
if you havent sacrificed any small woodland creatures lately>?...then yes ...you deserve a new bass!!!!!
Of course, especially if it will be a fretless. I bought my first fretless about a month ago and it's a completely different instrument, and so much better than a fretted, in my opinion, but that's just me. But it will take some time before you'll be ready to gig though.
